TOP 10 OF 2014

budapest
There was a whole lot to love this year in the cinema including him up there, Monsieur Gustav H., AKA Ralph “the incredible” Fiennes in Wes Anderson‘s GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, which just so happens to be my number one favourite film of 2014!

Go ahead, throw your hipster jokes in my direction, I don’t give one damn and / or shit, GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL is straight-up magical (not to mention hilarious, and at times, oddly terrifying). Moving at the speed of a freight-train, anchored by Ralph Fiennes insanely, insanely entertaining and precise performance, this film just doesn’t stop with the magic. I know there’s a lot of people out there who just can’t do Wes Anderson, and I get it, I do, sometimes I also find his style overbears his substance, but GRAND BUDAPEST is the perfect marriage of the two and for me, feels like his best film yet.

Here is the remaining 9 films, in no particular order, that I loved oh-so dearly…

CAST NO SHADOW

I think most of the films on my list have done their fair share of business (I’m looking at you, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY), so I’d like to encourage you to keep an eye out for CAST NO SHADOW, the Newfoundland feature film which cleaned up the awards at this year’s Atlantic Film Festival. It was honestly one of the best Canadian films I’ve ever seen. Head to their Facebook page and give ’em a like to keep track of their progress: https://www.facebook.com/castnoshadowmovie

WHAT I MISSED: INHERENT VICE, TWO DAYS ONE NIGHT, KUNG FU ELLIOT, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, BORGMAN and a bunch of other stuff.

That’s it for 2014! It was a good one! Here’s hoping STAR WARS EP. 7 will be everything the child in me wants it to be and you’ll be seeing it on here next January.

Thanks for reading (er, looking at jpegs)!

Mostest Stokedest – Summer Films 2010

FACT: Not only am I, Glen Matthews, a professional and world renowned Actor, I also like to watch movies! Weird, huh?

By combining the powers of the Internet, and the element of Blog, I would like to introduce you to five movies coming out this Summer that I am fully prepared to throw ten dollars at!

JUNE 11 – THE KARATE KID
I know there’s a lot of internet-flame-soldiers crapping all over this film’s existence, calling blasphemy from day one. Well flame-on, because I’m excited– no screw that, I am giddy for this remake! Perhaps it’s because I only finally watched the original “Wax on, wax off” KARATE KID last September, or maybe it’s because the only book larger than 200 pages I read for the first 17 years of my life was “I Am Jackie Chan”.

It opens two days before my birthday, so you better believe I’ll be in the middle of a jam-packed theatre full of kids who have no idea who Ralph Macchio is.

JULY 9 – PREDATORS
Everyone I talk to thinks that this is directed by Robert Rodriguez, it’s not, he’s producing, he’s too busy making kid’s films that don’t even make sense to kids. The director is a man named Nimrod Antal (yes, Nimrod), who directed last year’s ARMORED which I thought was a really underrated flick with a bunch of awesome performances.

Fun director + Predator = Yes.

JULY 16 – INCEPTION
This is Batman 3, right?

JULY (TBA – Limited Release) – WINNEBAGO MAN
This is a documentary about one of the funniest things the internet has ever given me…
Vodpod videos no longer available.

Essentially, the documentary catches up with Jack Rebney, the man featured in the video. Rest assured, if this film is successful, there will be a slew of documentaries about internet phenomena; I’m looking at you Two Girls, One Cup.

AUGUST 13 – SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
Edgar Wright has two feature length films under his belt: SHAUN OF THE DEAD & HOT FUZZ. Need I say more? The guy is ridiculously innovative. The film is based on the graphic novel created by Bryan Lee O’Malley as he lived in Halifax, so that gets a few brownie points in my books!

This August, style will battle substance in an all-out war!

So that’s it, that’s all! Bring on the Summer! What are YOU (emphasized with cap-lock) looking forward to?

Hello there, Haligonia!

For everyone who already frequents my blog, my blog is now featured on Haligonia.ca, a local website that features all sorts of local content, which is pretty damn’d awesome if I may say so myself. I am thrilled to welcome a whole new fleet of Haligonians to the wonderful world of Glen Matthews.

And now, to welcome said fleet.

Every good blog (and let me tell you, my blog is effing awesome) has a general theme. This blawg’s theme is me, The Glen Matthews. But what do I do? I am an actor! Fun, right? SO the purpose of this blog is to invite you to follow me in my various exploits in the film industry!

This is my headshot. I like it, it covers up my self-loathing very well!

Most notably, I worked on MOBY DICK, featuring Ethan Hawk, William Hurt, Gillian Anderson, and a bunch of other actors who are much prettier than me (click here for blog entries regarding Moby Dick). A couple of weeks ago, I worked on Cory Bowles‘ second short film RIGHTEOUS, which of course, I blogged about. Last year, I went to Sundance Film Festival with the short film TREEVENGE (blogged the entire adventure to Park City, Utah here) directed by Jason Eisener, who is currently in pre-production for his first major motion picture HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, to be shot here in the Spring.

Impressed? You shouldn’t be, it’s merely a series of lucky encounters & mind-blowing coincidences that make quantum physics look like a set of building blocks.

You can check out my page on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Glen-Matthews/) where you can watch plenty of videos of me doing things, and determine whether or not you can tolerate me enough to become a fan of mine. I implore you to do so, it improves your life!

All that I hope to do is offer a definitive timeline to accompany my raise to fame & riches (lots of riches), and my inevitable battle with Ellen Page for Halifax’s affection. I invite you to follow my adventures in the film & theatre industries and live your life vicariously through mine.

-Glen

PS. This entry was riddled with truthy sarcasm. The worst kind.
